Wheat...The decline across the futures complex weighed on west coast
cash prices this week, with hard red winter and dark northern spring off
30 to 40 cents from a week ago. White wheat bids fared better as nearby
basis strengthened nearly 20 cents against Chicago September futures.
Exporter bid structures also began reflecting seasonal harvest impact,
with carries being posted between spot and January deliveries. Harvest
continued to make good progress under extremely warm and dry conditions,
with above averages yields being reported for the winter wheat crop.
Weekly Sales...Overall export demand remains relatively soft primarily
on the shoulders of weak hard red winter sales. Total sales came in at
the 10 million bushel level for the third straight week to put current
year commitments at 265 million, which is 30% behind a year ago and 13%
under the five-year average pace. White wheat sales tied a marketing year
high of 5.3 million bushels and with 74 million bushels in commitments,
sets 16% ahead of a year ago and 21% above average. Hard red spring saw
4.1 million bushels in new sales and with 80 million in commitments, sets
21% behind a year ago and 12% below average. Hard red winter registered
less than a million bushels and with 63 million in commitments, sets 58%
below a year ago and 32% below average.
Top Buyers...The Philippines was the top U.S. wheat buyer last week
with 3.2 million bushels, followed by Mexico with 2.5 million, Vietnam at
2.3 million and Thailand with 1.6 million.
