DTN WEEKLY ROUND UP: A light to moderate trade took place
last week, starting out on Wednesday and went through Friday
with the bulk of sales taking place on Thursday. Northern
dressed business had a full range of $285 to $293, mostly
$292, generally steady with the prior week's weighted
averages. Southern live deals ranged from $182 to $186,
mostly $183, also about steady with the previous week's
weighted averages. According to Thursday's Daily Direct
Slaughter Cattle Summary reports, the accumulated weekly
average price totals were as follows, (the prior week's
weighted averages are listed in parentheses). KS
$183.04($182.62); NE $291.88($291.79); TX $182.97($182.44);
IA $291.81($291.95); CO not available due to confidentiality.
The Friday Afternoon Daily Direct Slaughter Cattle report
lists week-to-date trade volume totals as: KS 8,711; NE
24,040; TX 5,019; IA 25,121; CO not available due to
confidentiality. Friday's slaughter totaled 114,000 head,
7,000, less than the prior week and 12,000 below the previous
year. Saturday's kill was estimated at 13,000 head, bringing
the weekly total to 625,000 head, 7,000 down from the week
before, and 46,000 under 2022. The weekly averages for boxed
beef cutouts and boxed beef cuts: choice $302.79(-4.76),
select $280.66(-4.62), with an average choice select spread
of $22.13(-0.14), and a total load count including cuts,
trimmings, and grinds of 703(+17). Changes from the prior
week are listed in parentheses.
For the week ending September 16, 2023, Imported Beef Passed
for Entry in the U.S. totaled 47,447, 119.53% of the previous
week and 106.03% of the 4-week average.
DTN MORNING COMMENTS: It looks to be a typically quiet Monday
with both buyers and sellers busy taking inventory and
preparing for the week ahead. Bids and asking prices are not
established, and probably will not be until Wednesday or later.
Significant trade volume will likely be delayed until the
second half of the week. Beef cutouts are expected to be higher
with generally light box movement.
